Rapid Diagnostic Tools for Point-of-Care AMR Detection
A rapid diagnostic device developed in South Africa can identify resistant bacteria in under 30 minutes. This innovation could eliminate blind antibiotic prescribing in rural clinics across the continent.
Rapid point-of-care diagnosis of antibiotic resistance represents one of the greatest technical challenges in the fight against AMR, particularly in resource-limited settings. A team of researchers from Stellenbosch University in South Africa has just achieved a decisive breakthrough with the development of the RapidRESIST device, capable of identifying antibiotic-resistant bacteria in under 30 minutes from a simple clinical sample.
The device, roughly the size of a smartphone, uses a combination of microfluidics and electrochemical impedance detection to simultaneously detect bacterial presence and key resistance mechanisms (ESBL production, carbapenem resistance, methicillin resistance). Unlike conventional culture methods that require 48 to 72 hours, RapidRESIST provides actionable results in real time, enabling clinicians to prescribe targeted treatment from the first consultation.
Professor Bavesh Kana, program development director, emphasized that "RapidRESIST was designed from the ground up for African realities: it operates without stable electricity, without reagent refrigeration, and with minimal operator training." The cost per test is estimated at $3, making it accessible to budget-constrained health systems.
A multicenter clinical trial involving 5,000 patients across 50 rural clinics in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa is currently underway. Preliminary results show 92% concordance with reference methods. If these results are confirmed, RapidRESIST could obtain WHO prequalification by the end of 2027 and be deployed at scale across the continent.
