Zoonotic spillover events — the transmission of pathogens from wildlife to human populations — are emerging as a critical public health concern across West Africa. A multinational study published in the WHO Bulletin has documented a 40% increase in such events over the past five years in the sub-region. Researchers attribute this surge to accelerated deforestation, agricultural expansion, and the growing proximity between human communities and wildlife habitats. The study, conducted by a consortium of laboratories affiliated with Africa CDC and the Institut Pasteur de Dakar, analyzed over 3,000 samples collected across eight ECOWAS countries between 2022 and 2025. Findings reveal that bushmeat markets and shared grazing zones represent the primary high-risk contact points. Coronaviruses, paramyxoviruses, and filoviruses were among the most frequently detected viral families. Professor Amadou Sall, Director of the Institut Pasteur de Dakar, emphasized that "integrated surveillance at the human-animal-environment interface is now an absolute necessity, not a luxury." He advocated for the creation of a regional network of biological sentinels capable of detecting early spillover signals before they escalate into outbreaks. The authors recommend an annual investment of $50 million to strengthen rapid diagnostic capacity, train community health workers, and establish biosecurity corridors around sensitive ecological zones. Africa CDC has already incorporated these recommendations into its 2026-2030 strategic plan.
